Happy Birthday to my Mom!!!

23 Aug

Happy Birthday to my Mom!!!

Today is my mom Debra’s 54th birthday…I know, she looks great for her age and she is a pretty remarkable woman. She was born and raised in the Bronx and is 100% Puerto Rican (Making me and my sisters 1/2 PR and 1/2 Greek) and is a little spit fire. Strong emphasis on the little she is only 4′ 11″ ( I’m 5′ 3″ thanks mom, haha). She came from a life of poverty and physical abuse thanks to a horrible stepfather and she was able to overcome it all. She was one of the few of her six siblings to attend and graduate college and become a business manager. She managed a very successful bakery in Brooklyn where I pretty much grew up. I have very fond memories of those years in the bakery. My mother is currently a first degree black belt in the Korean Martial Art of Tang Soo Do. She now is also an instructor at the martial arts school she earned her belts in. This year she even attended the World Tournament of the Tang Soo Do Association in North Carolina and walked away with a bronze medal in weapons. She is truly an inspiration to me and keeps me looking forward to all that I can accomplish in the coming years. I LOVE YOU MOM AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

The Deluxe Food Lover's CompanionThe Deluxe Food Lover’s Companion by Sharon Tyler Herbst

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Great book! I descovered the Food Lover’s Companion at my neighbors home in her expansive library. It was the smaller older edition but it was wonderful. I would sit there in my free time reading it page by page as if it were a novel and I knew I had to get this book for myself (and a friend who is also crazy for cooking). So when I arrived home I went straight to Amazon and looked it up. To my pleasant surprise the Deluxe was available. I jumped at the chance and ordered one each for me and a friend. It is a hardcover with a sleek jacket, built in ribbon book mark, and gold edged pages. It was gorgeous! Inside is full of definitions, beautiful illustrations, and now in depth glossaries.I particularly love the Apple glossary. For anyone who loves food and the culinary arts this book is a MUST have for your library. So get it! Hahaha

DIY:Something Old Into Something New

16 Jun

It’s the new season and your home looks like it needs some freshening up style wise. Unfortunately for you, you are on a serious budget. What do you do? Why you breathe new life into some old items in your home. Before you know it your house has been transformed into a new and improved paradise. But best of all you save some green. So what are you waiting for? Get to DIY-ing!

Project 1: Sea Shell Box

Materials

  • Wooden box
  • Plastic Gloves (Optional)
  • Paint brushes of assorted sizes
  • Non Toxic Craft paint ( In my case by PLAID in Laguna and White for mixing)
  • Sheet of copper foil
  • Sea Shells, Beads, Fresh Water Pearls, etc.
  • Glue gun
  • Mod Podge
  1. Make sure your box is clean before you begin to paint then begin to mix your colors until you reach your desired shade.
  2. Begin to paint your box one side at a time. The great thing about this paint is that it dries quickly so even though you will need a few coats to reach the right opacity it will not take you all day.  Let your box fully dry before you begin the next step.
  3. Take your copper foil and cut it to your desired size.  Add a layer of Mod Podge to the foil and box. Firmly press the foil in place and let it dry. Then use the glue gun on the corners of the copper foil to keep it in place.
  4. Now it’s time to select your sea shells. Be careful not to stab your foil because it dents easily and will not iron out. Then add some glue to the bottoms of your selected shells and glue in place. I chose a large shell for the center so it can be a knob, which makes it stylish and functional.

I hope this inspired you to do some DIY projects on some old items in your home. Who needs to buy something new when you can spruce up an old friend? So take some time to get creative. Happy DIY-ing!!!
