A summer breakfast in the middle of winter…YUM!

27 Feb

I am nearing my graduation date in April and I couldn’t be happier except when I get screwed over by winter weather. I unfortunately am home missing a lesson because I couldn’t get out of my road due to ice. Not to mention I live an hour and fifteen minutes away from my school. So to cheer me up (because the winter blues are killing me) I decided to make a breakfast to give me summer dreams. So here is my recipe for scrambled eggs with scallion and sun dried¬†tomatoes. Mmmmmmmmm……

Sun dried tomato and Scallion Scrambled Eggs

1 whole egg and two eggs whites

5 small sun dried tomatoes, or more if you wish

Handful of fresh chopped scallions

Cheese of your choice as much as you wish (I had some sharp American on hand so that’s what I used)

Some type of bread (It was delicious on an English muffin)

Add a little bit of olive oil in a pan and heat for a minute or so on medium. Add your eggs to a bowl and beat then add cheese, scallions, and sun dried tomatoes, and mix until just blended. Add your egg mix to the pan and cook while constantly moving the eggs with a spatula until eggs are just firm. Toast up your english muffin and top with your scrambled eggs and enjoy. Serves 1.

Yanakis Family Thanksgiving Meal

25 Nov

For a multicultural family we go pretty traditional for our Thanksgiving meal. We have our turkey, stuffing, candied yams, biscuits, brussels¬†sprouts, and of course¬†pie. We also go all out by making almost everything from scratch but sometimes you just want to kick back and let Pillsbury and Marie Callender do some of the work for you ūüėõ Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with family and friends.—-Christina

I MISSED YOU GUYS SO MUCH! LET’S MAKE NICE :)

17 Nov

Hi to all of my followers and others who have visited my very inactive¬†blog over the past few months. I have been going to school for Skin Esthetics since September and this is why I have been MIA for so long. I have had many tests and lots of no sleep so keeping up with Salt Pepper Brilliant has been pretty much impossible…but I definitely missed it. So I am here to tell you that SPB will be back on track shortly. I am learning to manage my time better and I am currently working on new posts for you guys. The posts won’t be as abundant as before but there definitely won’t be such a large gap in between. The goal is at least one post a week. I will try my best to stick to this goal. Also I will start posting photos of what I am up to in school during the practical portion of my day. Yesterday we worked with paraffin it was pretty awesome.¬† So let’s make nice and have some cake and sushi with the Host Club <3—Christina

Pixie Sunbathing

Pixie Sunbathing

Here is a pic of Pixie doing her favorite thing in April. Every morning when I wake up I know where to find her. She is always curled up by the glass door soaking up some rays. SOME NEWS: I will be posting only once a week for the next five months and I will tell you why. I will be going to school for skin esthetics and will be so so busy. Plus I am living in a new place where no internet is set up…YIKES I KNOW! Well I will just have to get a lot done in a short amount of time. A lot of change is coming my way and it can be frightening. But I am looking at it as a challenge and a test of my character and determination. So till next week…talk to you all soon. I have to finish packing ūüôā —-Christina

DON’T WATCH ‘Revolution’! HERE IS WHY.

18 Sep

On my ‘Links to great sites’ page I have a link to a page called Regression. Regression is a film work created by¬†my friend Randy¬†who is a graduate from Penn State. He is a budding young filmmaker who has created this film that is set to be premiered this fall. Revolution a new show coming soon created by JJ Abrams follows the same exact story line as Regression with minor changes. Pure coincidence you say? The answer to that is NO. NOT WHEN YOU KNOW THE FACTS. FOLLOW the¬†LINK BELOW¬†to know the¬†TRUE STORY¬†behind Regression and this supposed original work known as Revolution. Help this story spread please so that justice can be served. No one has the right to take someone’s work and market it as their own. Especially when Randy’s career is in its infancy. Yet¬†bravely Randy¬†has chosen not to be defeated and is on the road to fighting back.

Naturally Healthy Hair: Herb Tea and Essential Oil Treatment Recipes

31 Aug

¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† It‚Äôs no new discovery that women love their hair. Even in this day and age men are beginning to form a close relationship with their tresses. ¬†However in the quest for beautiful and luxurious hair we foolishly bombard our delicate follicles with toxic sprays, serums, and dyes.¬† Our hair as a result becomes lifeless dull, and the opposite of everything that we wanted. So why do we continue slathering on harmful hair products when we can look to nature to heal our hair? Beats me. So now finding a healthy natural way to tame my hair has been my quest since the beginning of the year. In high school I completely damaged my hair. I flat iron straightened it, smeared on serums that I knew would be bad, and I dyed my hair a different color every two months. Needless to say my hair was dull and straw like. I did all of this without thinking that there would be any consequences; so I set out to try and reclaim my hair and change the way I care for it.¬† I hope to help you all do the same with these hair rinses and treatments. ¬†Enjoy your lovely tresses—-CMY

Herbs and Oils (Original Photograhy by Salt Pepper Brilliant CMY)

Ingredient Breakdown

  • Lavender Flowers- Really great for oily hair and controls acne.
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil- Excellent antibacterial (I know from experience, story below) treats dandruff, clears and prevents acne.
  • Pink Rose Petals- Excellent for dry and aging hair.
  • Rosemary
Essential Oil- Also contains antibacterial properties (Not as strong as Tea Tree) but most importantly for me it promotes hair growth in those with hair loss and thin hair. It also has a darkening effect on dark hair making it richer in color.
  • Nettle Leaf- Great scalp itch reliever and is great for increasing the shine factor in your hair.

(All ingredients used for these recipes are organic and all recipes are original)

Lavender Tea Tree Rinse

2 cups water

1 heaping tablespoon of Lavender Flowers

5-8 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

Put your two cups of water in a pot and bring to a gentle simmer. Turn off heat and remove pot from burner and add your lavender flowers. Stir your flowers gently so they all get wet because they will want to float. Let your lavender flowers steep for 5-10 minutes. Now only when your lavender tea has cooled down to a temperature that is warm but comfortable on your skin add your tea tree oil and stir. Brush your hair to remove any loose hairs and then begin to pour your lavender tea tree rinse over your hair. Have a bowl to catch the rinse that falls off of your hair so you can use it again. I suggest you run this rinse through your hair a few times and then let it sit for a few minutes so your hair can soak up its benefits. Then shampoo it out. (You can follow your rinse with the same oil treatment for the dry and aging hair then shampoo)

(I have now transitioned to using baby shampoo only with any essential oils I desire added into it. I find it very gentle and it doesn’t dry out my hair. I also do not use conditioner anymore.)

Rose Petal and Rosehip Seed Oil Rinse and Treatment

2 cups water

1 heaping tablespoon of Pink Rose Petals

1-2 teaspoons Rosehip Seed Oil (Moisturizing and rejuvenating for skin and hair, carrier oil)

3-5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (To aid in hair growth and color)

Warm Dry Towel

Bring the two cups of water to a gently simmer and add the rose petals. Let the rose petals steep for 5-10 minutes. Now only when your rose tea has cooled down to a temperature that is warm but comfortable on your skin can you begin your rinse. Brush your hair to remove any loose hairs and then begin to pour your rose petal rinse over your hair. Have a bowl to catch the rinse that falls off of your hair so you can use it again. I suggest you run this rinse through your hair a few times and then let it sit for a few minutes so your hair can soak up its benefits. Wring out any excess rinse and now you can move on to your oil treatment. Place the Rosehip Seed Oil in a small bowl and add your rosemary essential oil. Blend them well. Place the oil mixture in the palm of your hands and warm them up by rubbing your hands together. Now gently and evenly distribute the oil from tips to roots so you do not have an excess of oil on the top of your head. Now take a dry warm towel and wrap your hair in it and let the oil soak in for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Shampoo the oils out and style consciously.

Nettle Tea with Peppermint Essential Oil

2 cups of water

1 heaping tablespoon of Nettle Leaf

1-2 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (Some antibacterial properties, tingle and scent)

Put your two cups of water in a pot and bring to a gentle simmer. Turn off heat and remove pot from burner and add your Nettle Leaf. Let the nettle leaf steep for 5-10 minutes. Now only when your nettle tea has cooled down to a temperature that is warm but comfortable on your skin add your peppermint oil, stir, and begin your rinse. Brush your hair to remove any loose hairs and then begin to pour your nettle mint rinse over your hair. Have a bowl to catch the rinse that falls off of your hair so you can use it again. I suggest you run this rinse through your hair a few times and then let it sit for a few minutes so your hair can soak up its benefits. Shampoo out. (You can follow your rinse with the same oil treatment for the dry and aging hair then shampoo)

¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† I hope you all like these hair rinses and treatments. They are natural and organic and they really work. I have religiously stuck to using only the healthiest ingredients for my hair and I have seen a considerable improvement in growth, color, strength, and shine. I hope they work for you too. Much love—-Christina

My Painful and Miraculous Tea Tree Oil Story

One day about two weeks ago I found myself home alone and hungry. I decided to go to my cupboard and grab a can of red kidney beans so I can make my Grandma’s famous adobo beans and rice. I somehow fumbled this jumbo can of beans and it fell straight onto my left thumb forcefully breaking a piece of my nail off. Needless to say I was swearing up a storm and bleeding so I rushed to the sink to rinse my wound. My old self would have normally run to the bottle of peroxide but I remembered my small bottle of Tea Tree Essential Oil.

Up until then I had only considered using it for acne treatments even though I was aware of its powerful antibacterial properties. What the heck I said I’m in pain and I need to clean this now disfigured nail out. So I took a clean bowl filled it with warm water and added a hefty dose of tea tree oil. I soaked my thumb for several minutes then simply dried it off gently with a tissue. I only soaked my thumb twice using this method and only on the day of the injury. My thumb was pink and healthy looking and the bleeding had stopped immediately. I had no infection and no discomfort after the horrible event. Now as I am writing this I look at my nail and the missing piece has pretty much completely grown in. There is no pain and not even a sign of an injury. I used nature as my medicine and it healed me. All I can say is get yourself a bottle today. (Oh and I cooked and ate those beans to stick it to them…evil laugh)

What I’m Reading: Ouran HighSchool Host Club Book 1

22 Jul

What I'm Reading: Ouran HighSchool Host Club Book 1

This Manga series is a romantic comedy about a girl named Haruhi who on scholarship gets into the mega rich school of Ouran Academy. Upon wandering throught the halls for a quiet place to study, Haruhi wanders into Music Room 3; where she finds an extremely handsom group of young men that make up the Host Club. These young men make a little money on the side by going on dates specifically taylored to the female clients that visit the club. Haruhi gets so startled by the site of these boys that she breaks an $80,000 vase that was to be put up for auction by the club.(Oh and did I mention they first thought that she was a boy because she couldn’t afford a uniform and wore her father’s clothes? I didn’t? Well now you know! Haha.) So in order to payback the debt to the Host Club Haruhi must mascarade as a boy and become a Host. I was originally introduced to this series created by Bisco Hatori as an anime by my sister. (Thanks Michelle! xoxoxo) It was really hilarious and I quickly fell in love with all of the characters. You, like Haruhi are thrust into these whirlwind adventures with the upper crust of society. So when my birthday came around I knew what I wanted. I started to collect the mangas for double the Ouran fun. If you love light hearted hilarity, charming characters, and some extravagant living do yourself a favor; watch the anime and read the mangas. You won’t be sorry :)—-CMY

Other great manga/anime Black Butler (Dramatic with some comedic elements) Death Note (More dramatic with some comedic elements). Both excellent!
